Racing review week ending 28th June 2024

Al Simmo Steph Hollinshead Racing

It was a busy week for the yard with Al Simmo, Pepsi Cat, Royal Musketeer and Ableseeinger all in action over the course of the week.

Al Simmo (Al Kazeem x Magic Destiny) pictured above, made her seasonal reappearance in the  4pm ‘Packhorse Moulton Supports Racing Welfare Handicap’ (Class 3) (0-90, 3yo+) over 6 furlongs on the July course at Newmarket on Saturday 22nd June 2024 for owner Mr Ray Bailey.

“Simmo, ridden by Cieren Fallon, was carrying a lot of weight (10st 2) and there was a lot of pace around us so we ended up doing too much at the front end. If we had been drawn on the other side we could have probably done our own thing and stayed away from the pack but we were wedged in with the pace and went forward with them. She came out of the race fine and will certainly come on for that run with the intention of targeting a Fillies Handicap back at the same track later this month,” said Steph.

Pepsi Cat (Tamayuz x Music Pearl) travelled up to Ayr to compete in the 6.25pm ‘Unite The Union Winning For Members EBF Land O’Burns Fillies’ Stakes’ (Listed Race), (Class 1), (3yo+) over 5 furlongs on Saturday 22nd June for owner Mrs Debbie Hodson.

“That was a great run from Pepsi in a very fast race, probably her career best based on timings. Its a shame she missed out on black type again, she really deserves it given her consistent form. Dougie Costello kept her in touch with the leaders from the outset and was only just beaten by a neck for third place. We’ll keep a look out for some more suitable listed races but they are sparse so we may have to go down the handicap route in the meantime,” said Steph.

Result: Finished 4th of 7 runners.

Royal Musketeer Steph Hollinshead Racing

Royal Musketeer (Acclamation x Queen’s Pearl) pictured above, headed to Newbury on Tuesday 25th June to take part in the 7.15pm ‘Pride Embracing Every Shade Handicap’ (Class 5), (0-75, 4yo+), over 7 furlongs on Str good to firm ground for owners S & S Racing.

“A little bit of a disappointing run from Musky, we tried him in a hood as he tends to overdo things in the early stages of a race getting keen in first furlong, so we switched him off and hoped he would finish off the race better. Dougie Costello settled him and had him in a great position but the race seem to quicken and progress which didn’t suit him, so we’ll have to decide if we keep him in a hood next time out,” said Steph.

Result: Finished 10th of 13 runners.

Albeseeingyer (Al Kazeem x Magical Destiny) travelled up to Carlisle on Wednesday 26th June to compete in the 5.15pm ‘Great Community Raceday Saturday 6th July Fillies’ Handicap’ (Class 4), (0-80, 3yo+), over 7 furlongs on  good to firm ground for owner Mr. Ray Bailey.

“A good run from ‘baby’, they went really quick and we were unlucky not to get 2nd place. We were a bit flat out early on, and when we straightened up Dougie Costello went to follow the favourite and one just rolled in on her. It was an impressive performance in the best grade race she has run to date and we look forward to getting her back out again shortly,” said Steph.

Result: 4th of 8 runners.
